ABOUT
Cheryl
I am Cheryl. I live in Jalan Kukoh, in a flat where the window grille casts stripe shadows on the floor and the wall carries a sun-bar at the same hour most clear days. I work in admin — spreadsheets, polite emails, the kind of day that looks flat until I walk home and notice where the light has moved since morning.
I write about Jalan Kukoh, Chin Swee, Pearl's Hill, Chinatown Complex, the river when I need air. I am not a journalist, not a critic, not anyone with credentials worth listing. I am someone who tracks daylight the way others track bus times — sun-bar, grille stripe, kettle glare on the counter — and who believes a day can be measured by where the light lands if you pay attention.
What I notice: the kopi cup in the window bar at seven fifteen. The letterbox that stays shut at four. The pothos turned fifteen degrees at five thirty. The mirror row doubling Upper Cross Street at two ten. The hour between last direct sun and full shadow when the block sounds different. I write in first person because these are my eyes, my routes, my small exactitudes. I do not speak for my neighbours or for Singapore as a whole.
I grew up between rental flats and this current address is the first place that feels like mine — not because it is grand, but because I know the stripe schedule and the provision shop uncle who nods without speaking. Chin Swee is not a backdrop. It is part of the room I live inside, including a November night I heard and still do not understand.
If you read something here and think I have got a detail wrong — a road name, a direction, a memory — please write to me. I would rather correct than perform certainty I do not have.
I write when the day leaves a stripe of light I cannot ignore — not dramatic, just persistent. That is enough.
A note on this blog
DailyBeam is my personal site. The words are mine — my habits, my opinions, my way of remembering when I sit down to write. Do not read them as medical, legal, financial, fitness or professional guidance. They are field notes from one person watching daylight move across Jalan Kukoh and nearby streets. I describe what I see; I do not claim to represent anyone else. If something here is wrong, tell me and I will amend it.
